Gujarat govt as HC rejects 10% reservation for EBCs in educational institutions
The Gujarat High Court on Thursday quashed the State government’s notification granting 10% quota for economically backward classes (EBCs) in educational institutions. The Gujarat government in April, had announced a 10% quota for all members of economically backward classes, including those belonging to the upper caste. The decision, that was taken under Anandiben Patel’s government, didn’t seem to have bright prospects given an existing 49% reservation for SC, ST and OBC. The Supreme Court dictates that no state can have over 50% reservation. The quota was aimed at benefiting families with less than Rs six lakh of annual income.
